Clubs' debts and the role of the FA face Government scrutiny

The government is launching a new inquiry into the running of football and opening up the thorny issue of club debts and regulation.

The investigation, by the Culture, Media and Sport select committee, will look into borrowing levels after Manchester United and Liverpool supporters expressed concerns.

They will also discuss the possibility of Government intervention at the FA after previously raising the need for reform.

The inquiry is "responding not only to high-profile coverage of Liverpool and United, but also to concerns that current and future generations of supporters are ill-served by current football club regulations," the committee said.

It will also deal with the role of supporters' stakes.
