From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Charlton Athletic had their bid for the central defender Madjid Bougherra accepted by Sheffield Wednesday yesterday. The exact fee was not released but the Owls had previously rejected a £1.3m offer for the 24-year-old. The Premiership side then made an "improved offer" for the Algeria international.

The Owls chairman, Dave Allen, declared earlier in the week that he would only listen to offers of around £3m for Bougherra, who arrived on a free transfer in the summer from French side Gueugnon. Bougherra is now expected to travel to London for talks and a medical over the weekend.

Tottenham midfielder Edgar Davids has reportedly agreed an 18-month contract to join Ajax, the club he helped to three league titles, a Uefa Cup and a Champions' League win in the 1990s. After successful spells with Milan, Juventus, Barcelona and Inter, he joined Spurs in 2005.

Watford have confirmed the signing of striker Steven Kabba in a £500,000 transfer from fellow Premiership strugglers Sheffield United. The 25-year-old has agreed a two-and-a-half-year deal.

Wigan have signed the Chesterfield striker Caleb Folan for £500,000. The 24-year-old has scored eight goals in 19 games this season and has agreed a three-and-a-half-year deal at the JJB Stadium.

Fulham have signed the former Chelsea midfielder Alexei Smertin. Smertin's arrival is expected to be announced ahead of today's FA Cup fourth-round tie against Stoke and he has already been training with the Cottagers prior to completing his move from Dynamo Moscow.
