From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Hearts midfielder, Colin Cameron, joined ambitious Wolves for £2m yesterday. The First Division promotion hopefuls agreed terms with Cameron, who has long been rated by many as the best player never to have left Scotland. The player jumped at the opportunity, even though Wolves are outside the Premiership.

The hard-driving midfielder impressed the Molineux manager, Dave Jones, when he saw him play last weekend. Jones, who has already bought Mark Kennedy from Manchester City and Shaun Newton from Charlton, has now spent around £5m on a new midfield.

Cameron is the latest in a line of Hearts' players sold to an English club. The Tyne-castle club have also offloaded David Weir and Gary Naysmith to Everton in recent years.

But Cameron, the club captain, is the most expensive of the departures, with Wolves paying £1.75m up front and £250,000 if they win promotion.

Portsmouth have signed the Scotland striker, Mark Burchill, from Celtic for £600,000. The 21-year-old should go straight into the Pompey team for the trip to Stockport after agreeing a four-year deal.

Sunderland's Swedish midfielder, Stefan Schwarz, has announced his international retirement. The 32-year-old, whose international career spanned 12 years and 69 caps, made the decision after talks with his club manager, Peter Reid, and the Sweden national coach, Tommy Soderberg.

''It's all over for me as far as playing for the national team is concerned," the former Arsenal and Valencia midfielder said. "I've picked up many injuries playing for Sweden and it doesn't feel right. I want to put all my efforts into Sunderland.

''I had a chat with Tommy Soderberg and Peter Reid and feel I've made the right decision.''
