Adriano led Brazil to a memorable victory in Frankfurt with a blistering 11th-minute shot and a 63rd-minute header to make him the tournament's top scorer with five goals.

Kaka and Ronaldinho also got themselves on the scoresheet in Carlos Alberto Parreira's 100th match as Brazil coach. The substitute Pablo Aimar scored Argentina's only goal with a brave diving header.

After two weeks of blisteringly hot weather, the match was played as a thunderstorm raged around the Waldstadion. The new stadium's roof was closed but water still leaked through on to the pitch.
