Bower beats Grobbelaar
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.A lacklustre year for sports publishing was reflected in the announcement yesterday of the winner of the William Hill Sports Book of the Year award.
Broken Dreams: Vanity, Greed and the Souring of British Football, by the investigative journalist Tom Bower, beat off the likes of David Thomas's colourful and personal account of the Grobbelaar trials, Foul Play, but the calibre of the 2003 shortlist, which also included Bob Wilson's autobiography, was distinctly lower than in recent years.
Bower's book is an admirable attempt to put to the sword all those figures who have been lining their pockets at football's expense since the financial revolution of the early 1990s, and was described by one reviewer when it was published in March as "dense but devastating". But it is, essentially, a glorified trawl through the cuttings libraries.
'Broken Dreams: Vanity, Greed and the Souring of British Football', by Tom Bower, Simon & Schuster, £17.99 hardback, £6.99 paperback.
