Liverpool fans also disrupted the silence at the City of Manchester Stadium. The Anfield manager, Rafael Benitez, admitted it was "a pity" some of Liverpool's supporters failed to observe the silence, although some Liverpool fans did join in the applause when Best's name was announced. "It is a pity," Benitez said. "It was only a few people and most of them did applaud but it is a pity."
The Manchester United director Sir Bobby Charlton has revealed the club will let the fans decide on a fitting tribute to George Best. One option is for a statuein his honour.
* The Celtic manager, Gordon Strachan, has expressed a desire to speak to former Manchester United captain Roy Keane about a possible move to the club.
