Gareth Bale has inspired Wales to their first ever major tournament semi-final but has another score to settle as his side prepare to take on Portugal on Wednesday evening.

Much has been made of the forward coming up against his Real Madrid team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, and Bale has yet to taste victory in five matches against his colleague.

The pair have never faced each other in a full international - their countries last meeting in 2000 in Chaves, Portugal prevailing 3-0.

Bale made his Tottenham debut against Ronaldo's United shortly after joining the London club in August 2007, but the Portguese missed the Old Trafford match through suspension.

The Welshman then missed two later meetings that season with a foot injury and was an unused substitute as Spurs drew 0-0 with United at White Hart Lane in December 2008.

The pair finally lined up against each other in January 2009.

With Ronaldo leaving for Spain in the summer of 2009 the pair did not line up against each other for a further two years, as Spurs travelled to the Bernabeu for the first leg of a Champions League quarter-final. Both players played the whole match as Real eased to victory against the 10-man Premier League side. Ronaldo volleyed the fourth goal in the closing minutes to continue his stranglehold over his future colleague.

Bale played the full match of the return leg at White Hart Lane as Ronaldo was taken off halfway through the second period having scored the only goal of the night. Real progressed to the last four, where they would lose to Barcelona, and Bale would have to wait two more years before sharing a pitch with Ronaldo again.
