Pogrebnyak pulled out of the Championship on Saturday with a knee injury he picked up shortly after scoring in a warm-up match against Serbia on 28 May. The 21-year-old Ivanov, who plays for the Russian club Krylya Sovietov Samara, featured in the coach Guus Hiddink's provisional squad for the tournament. Russia's forward options for their opener against Spain tomorrow were already limited before Pogrebnyak's injury because the playmaker Andrei Arshavin is suspended for the first two matches.
Four held after 'massive alcohol consumption' fuels disturbances
Though Euro 2008's opening matches passed off peacefully in the stadiums, police in Basle reported disturbances. Twelve people were taken to a special temporary jail in the city, which hosted Switzerland's 1-0 defeat by the Czech Republic, either for vandalism or aggression towards officers. Four were held in custody, police said. Around 20 people had to make use of a sobering-up facility and roughly 200 were treated for minor injuries and problems with their blood pressure. "Massive alcohol consumption led to a series of incidents of shoving and some fighting, but they did not have any serious consequences," a statement said.
Player to watch Daniele De Rossi
*In the last tournament Italy's De Rossi was dismissed for brutally elbowing Brian McBride. The offence cost him a start in the World Cup final, though he did return from suspension to score in the penalty shoot-out.
De Rossi has since made himself indispensable to the Azzurri, even captaining the side. Born and bred in the Italian capital the 24-year-old Roma man does the hard yards in midfield. It is a role noticed more by team-mates than fans but there will be several Premier League managers watching tonight and wondering how much it would cost to prise him away from the Giallorossi.
Familiar faces: KHALID BOULAHROUZ (Netherlands)
The Dutch centre-half, known as "Khalid The Cannibal", was signed for Chelsea by Jose Mourinho from Hamburg SV in 2006 for £8m. However, he had an uncomfortable season that culminated in a red card against Arsenal as Chelsea lost the league to United. Now on loan at Seville from the London club.
