Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

England travel to Stockholm to face Sweden in a friendly tonight.

Here, Press Association Sport looks at some past meetings between the two countries:

June 17, 1992: Sweden 2 England 1, European Championship finals group stage

England were dumped out of Euro 92 by the host nation after surrendering a lead in their final group match. David Platt put Graham Taylor's men ahead but Sweden hit back through Jan Eriksson. Taylor controversially and bizarrely took Gary Lineker off and Tomas Brolin netted a famous winner.

September 5, 1998: Sweden 2 England 1, European Championship qualifier

England's Euro 2000 qualifying campaign got off to a dreadful start in Stockholm with a defeat which also saw Paul Ince sent off. Alan Shearer gave England a first-minute lead but Sweden struck twice in two minutes just after the half-hour through Andreas Andersson - with the aid of a deflection - and Johan Mjallby.

June 2, 2002: England 1 Sweden 1, World Cup finals group stage

Sol Campbell rose to power home a header from a David Beckham free-kick to put England on course for victory in Saitama, Japan. But they were pegged back after a mistake by Danny Mills allowed Sweden possession outside the area and Niclas Alexandersson struck.

June 20, 2006: England 2 Sweden 2, World Cup finals group stage

England lost Michael Owen to serious injury in the early stages but Joe Cole put them ahead in Cologne with a stunning long-range volley. Marcus Allback levelled from a corner but Steven Gerrard looked to have won it with a firm header five minutes from time. It was not to be though, as a long throw-in bounced through the area and Henrik Larsson turned in.

June 16, 2012 - Sweden 2 England 3, European Championship finals group stage

Danny Welbeck scored a superb winner in Kiev to put England on course for the Euro 2012 knockout stages. Andy Carroll put Roy Hodgson's men ahead but Olof Mellberg took advantage of poor defending to strike twice for Sweden. Substitute Theo Walcott equalised and then crossed for Welbeck to deftly back-heel the decisive goal.
