From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. England put in yet another typical England performance against Slovenia – frustratingly sloppy.

Slovenia were the better team in truth, hitting both the post and crossbar, the latter thanks to a magnificent stop from Joe Hart.

The experiment of starting Wayne Rooney from the bench didn’t appear to have too much of a difference on England’s play, with his replacement Eric Dier nearly guilty of handing Slovenia a first-half goal.

Stand-in skipper Jordan Henderson couldn’t replicate his sterling performance against Malta on the weekend and joined his central midfield partner in nearly handing the hosts a goal with a terrible backpass.

Given the way the game went, England could easily have lost their first qualifying game in 31, their last exactly seven years and one day before this draw.

Gareth Southgate will be happy with the hard-earned point as he keeps England top of Group F by two points, even though the point ended England’s 14-game winning streak in qualifiers.
