Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Daniel Sturridge: The Liverpool striker has suffered a disappointing season having been plagued with injury after injury. He proved his worth against Wales though with a late winner to clinch victory and is now expected to start ahead of Harry Kane. A huge gamble? Possibly. Nonetheless, Sturridge is one of the few players in the England squad to bring genuine attacking flair and creativity to the team. He’s a natural goal-scorer and today should be a huge opportunity for him to prove his worth. It all depends if he can hit the ground running from the off and find the sort of form which terrified defenders only a couple of seasons ago.

England's only previous game at Saint-Etienne's Geoffroy Guichard Stadium was in the last 16 of the 1998 World Cup against Argentina. It was a game in which David Beckham was infamously sent off for lashing out at Diego Simeone in a moment that has been etched into the psyche of English football. Despite Michael Owen’s wonder goal, England went on to draw 2-2 before losing 4-3 on penalties.

Marek Hamsik: The Napoli captain has been at the heart of Slovakia’s Euro 2016 campaign so far and will be the man to watch in today’s fixture. The midfield dynamo has been directly involved in four goals in his past three competitive games with Slovakia, scoring three and providing an assist for the fourth. He scored a stunning goal to seal Slovakia’s victory against Russia and orchestrated the run of play enjoying more touches than any other of his team-mates.
