In an interview with ESPN Brasil, Alves claimed that Brazilian officials were afraid of hiring a foreign coach for the national side. Watch the interview below.
“Since I worked with Pep, he already had in his mind the starting line-up of the Brazil national team he wanted to coach.”
“We had the opportunity – I swear to God – I can be blamed as gossip but not as a liar.”
Alves added, “If you let an opportunity like this go by, then you are not really thinking about the national team.”
Today marks a year on since Brazil’s humiliating 7-1 defeat against Germany in the last year’s World Cup semi-final. Fans will be ruing the Brazilian FA's decision and wondering if Guardiola could have inspired them to a host victory.
Described by Alves as “the best coach in the world”, Guardiola’s Barcelona dominated club football, winning 14 trophies in four seasons including two Champions League crowns.
In 2013, he was appointed the Bayern Munich coach and has gone on to win back-to-back league titles.
