Own Goal joins Sir Bobby Charlton and Wayne Rooney as all-time England top scorer

When San Marino defender Cristian Brolli headed past Also Simoncini, he unwittingly made Three Lions history.

Wayne Rooney had already equalled Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time scoring record after he converted a penalty to make it 49 goals for his nation.

Heading into the weekend England had seen 48 goals scored past them by their opponents - and Brolli's header made it a three-way tie.

With the spotlight on Rooney’s attempts to take the record against San Marino, it seems everyone has forgotten about ‘Own Goal’, who is also Arsenal’s leading goal scorer in the Premier League this season.

San Marino have form for own goals against the Three Lions. Defender Alessandro Della Valle scored two own-goals in his last two games against England.

England captain Rooney has already seen one own goal scored in front of him this season too, when Tottenham right-back Kyle Walker poked the ball in off the England captain’s toe at Old Trafford on the opening day.
