Suggestions that key performers like Wayne Rooney could be exhausted by the time the World Cup comes round in June have been dismissed by England's manager, Fabio Capello, who believes it will not be in their club managers' interests to over-play them. Leading players face a busy end to the season with the Premier League, FA Cup, Europa League and Champions' League all reaching a climax in May, when England will also play their final two warm-up games before flying to South Africa.

Capello says: "I am not worried about Rooney burning out because he is so strong. He could play every game, he has that strength and energy. Lampard and Terry are the same, but the players have to understand that the manager decides. I am confident Alex Ferguson and Carlos Ancelotti will take care of their players. They will also want their top players in good condition for the big games at the end of the season."
