England suffered a shock defeat to Iceland in the European Championship, making it inevitable that manager Roy Hodgson would resign.
The former Fulham and West Bromwich Albion boss was informed by Football Association chiefs that nothing less than a semi-final berth would keep him in a job this summer.
But England continued to frustrate, drawing with both Russia and Slovakia in Group B before suffering a humilating defeat to Iceland in the knock-out stage.
Despite Hodgson calling time on his four-year reign, however, there remains few options for the FA to turn to.
Alan Pardew, long considered a favourite for the post, has seen his stock fall at Crystal Palace after an encouraging start while Brendan Rodgers, who was approached by the FA, has recently joined Scottish champions Celtic.
Elsewhere, Gareth Southgate, the current England Under-21s manager, is one option for the senior team after impressing senior figures at St George's Park.
Roberto Martinez, the former Everton head coach, is another name to be suggested but England have made their intentions to appoint a homegrown manager clear.

Iceland will now face France in the quarter-finals while England will return home in disgrace yet again. Now Hodgson faces an uncertain future amid calls from all sides for him to be dismissed.
