From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The Republic of Ireland's preparation for Euro 2012 might have gone a little more smoothly after they were thrown into injury turmoil this week. Several key members of the initial 23-man squad, including Shay Given and John O'Shea, have sustained niggles in a far from ideal run-up to the tournament.

Yesterday, manager Giovanni Trapattoni decided to omit the Wolves utility man Kevin Foley, who was struggling with a hamstring problem. Paul McShane has been drafted into the squad. Foley still played 45 minutes last night in a 5-0 win over a Tuscan XI played near their Italian training centre.

"I have had to make a tough decision when it comes to naming the players ," Trapattoni said. "Foley, O'Shea, McShane, Darren O'Dea, Given had all been carrying knocks and we have been monitoring them closely.

"Although Kevin has been recovering well, I have made the difficult decision to leave him out of the list after completing fitness tests on O'Shea and McShane."

Trapattoni hopes that all his squad are available for selection against Hungary on Monday.
