Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Rob Green: Struggled early in first cap for two years. Let Pedersen corner hit post but improved later and showed good handling. 7/10

Phil Jones: Comfortable and at ease in possession on only his fifth cap. Saw deflected shot hit post shortly after break. 6

Joleon Lescott: Senior member of defence helped guide former club colleagues around him. Became third captain of the night. 8

Phil Jagielka: Stood up well to Norwegian attacks as home side enjoyed majority of possession after break. Steady reserve. 7

Leighton Baines: Tested Jarstein with a free-kick and held up home attacks well as Norway pressed for a merited equaliser. 6

James Milner: Manchester City utility man drove poor effort straight at goalkeeper but willing to help out in defence and attack. 6

Steven Gerrard: Reinstated as captain, steamed into the tackle that forced Tom Hogli off early. Helped generate room for Young goal. 6

Scott Parker: Functional in possession before being withdrawn early in second half as a precautionary measure. 6

Stewart Downing: Set up Carroll header in first half but offered little else to win over the doubters after a poor season at club level. 6

Ashley Young: Continues to revel on national stage. Took goal superbly, after a fine turn. A useful alternative in Rooney's absence. 7

Andy Carroll: Powered header wrong side of post and kept defence busy but saw little of play after break. Set up Young for goal. 7

Best off the bench: Gareth Barry. Capped by eighth England manager but lasted just half an hour, before succumbing to injury. 5
