Your support makes all the difference.An injury has forced Manchester United defender Luke Shaw to withdraw from the England squad for the Uefa Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain.
Shaw arrived at St Georges Park on Monday morning but has returned to United after being ruled out with a thigh injury. Ben Chilwell, who received a late call to the England squad during the last international break, has been promoted by Gareth Southgate from the Under-21 team to take Shaw’s place in the side.
Shaw suffered a nasty head injury while playing in England’s 2-1 defeat against Spain in their Nations League opener, but has since been able to continue his strong start to the season at United despite the uncertainty surrounding Jose Mourinho’s future.
“Luke Shaw has withdrawn from the England squad and is returning to Manchester United, meaning the in-form defender will miss the two Uefa Nations League matches against Croatia and Spain,” said a statement from Manchester United.
“The 23-year-old’s exit from the Three Lions’ camp was announced by The FA on Monday evening, and he will now return to the Aon Training Complex for treatment,” it added. “It remains to be seen if Shaw will be available for the Reds’ anticipated return to action on Saturday 20 October, against Jose Mourinho’s former club Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League.”
Shaw is the second player to withdraw from the squad after James Tarkowski was replaced by uncapped Brighton defender Lewis Dunk after picking up an injury.
“It’s been a massive night for myself and my family,” said Chilwell after making his England debut during their friendly win against Switzerland at his home ground, the King Power Stadium. “The summer has proved that English football is powerful and there’s not a better time to be involved in the senior set up.”
The Leicester left-back joins club teammate James Maddison in a youthful squad as Southgate, who has just committed to England for the next four years, begins to develop his side for the 2020 European Championships and the next World Cup. 18-year-old Borussia Dortmund forward Jordan Sancho received his first senior call-up along with Mason Mount, 19, who is on loan at Derby from Chelsea.
"It's great the first thing Gareth does, when a player gets injured, he looks to the 21s or the 20s and the 19s now as well," said England Under-21 manager Aidy Boothroyd, who has promoted Jay Dasilva, on loan at Bristol City from Chelsea, to his side in Chilwell's absence.
"He is promoting young talent and for the rest of the guys in the pathway it makes our job a lot easier because they know if they do well they've got a chance."
