Tottenham striker Harry Kane said the moment he scored on his England debut was the best of his career.

The 21-year-old came on as a substitute against Lithuania to make his debut and took just 78 seconds to do what he has been doing all season - score a goal.

Kane already has 29 for Tottenham this season and added a 30th with just his third touch, a header at the back post after some brilliant work down the left by Raheem Sterling.

Asked if he knew how long he had taken to open his account, Kane said on ITV: "Maybe a minute? Eighty seconds? Hey, it's not too bad!

"It's the start I dreamed of, it's a little bit of a blur at the minute.

"It's the best moment by far, to represent your country at senior level is the top. Hopefully I can keep doing it and it's the first of many."

Kane replaced England captain Rooney, who had scored England's opener, the 47th of his international career.

"It's fantastic, international football's different and to score after 80 seconds is incredible for Harry," said Rooney.

"We're all delighted and hopefully it's the first of many."

Studio pundits Glenn Hoddle and Lee Dixon were thrilled with the impact of the Tottenham striker.

"He's one of those players, he will create his own chances he will keep scoring goal after goal wherever he is playing," Dixon said.

"He's good with his left foot, he's good with his right, he has every attribute," Hoddle added. "Let's not go over over the top."

Danny Welbeck and Raheem Sterling scored England's other goals, the Liverpool man also opening his international account in an impressive second half.

Rooney could have had more goals as he pursues Bobby Charlton's England record of 49, hitting the woodwork twice in the first half to remain two behind.

He said: "I was a bit disappointed with the first one that hit the post, I thought I got a shove, and the second I've had to go far corner and unfortunately it's hit the post.

"I'm happy we won the game, it's a big three points in the qualifying campaign.

"Since the World Cup we've been fantastic, some great victories, we've been scoring goals and it's a really energetic team. A lot of teams around Europe will be looking at this team and taking notice."
