The Chile international was at the centre of bizarre scenes during Wednesday's quarter-final with Uruguay.
The 29-year-old defender, who has previously played for West Brom, Brighton and Nottingham Forest, was caught on camera provoking Uruguay striker Edinson Cavani following a confrontation between the two.
After referee Sandro Ricci spoke to the pair in an attempt to dissolve the feud, Jara went back towards Cavani and inexplicably tried to put his finger in Cavani’s anus.
The Paris Saint-Germain player responded by making contact with the face of Jara.
Despite the minimal contact, Jara flung himself theatrically to the floor, and Ricci issued a second yellow card to Cavani leading to the Uruguayan's dismissal.
Chile went on to win the match 1-0 and advance to the semi-finals.
But whilst his actions may have helped his international side, they could lead to problems at club level.
“He knows that if an offer comes he can go,” Mainz sports director Christian Heidel told Bild. “We do not tolerate that. More than the prod, however, it is what comes afterwards that makes me angry. I hate theatrics more than anything.”
Conmebol, South American football's governing body, have confirmed that Jara will be investigated over the incident which could lead to him missing the rest of the tournament.
