Rooney scored his 45th and 46th England goals during Tuesday night's 3-1 international friendly victory against Scotland at Celtic Park to move to within two strikes of Lineker's record of 48 goals.
Few would back against the Three Lions skipper reaching Sir Bobby Charlton's all-time record of 49 goals by the end of the season and Match Of The Day presenter Lineker reacted positively on Twitter when Rooney scored his first goal of the night 92 seconds after the half-time interval to give England a 2-0 lead.
"Yes! Get in there, just 4 to go @WayneRooney. It's c**p being second anyway," the former Tottenham and England striker wrote on the social media website.
"Feel Rooney's breath on the back of my neck," Lineker then tweeted after Rooney scored his second, before joking in a further tweet that the England captain had decided to retire from international football.
Rooney, however, is not thinking too much about personal achievements at the moment, even though Peter Shilton's record of 125 England caps is also within reach.
"It was a fantastic victory against a Scotland team in good form. It's a great win," Rooney, who has now played 101 times for his country, said.
"I'm enjoying my football. I've always loved playing for England, I'm on a good run of goals and I hope that continues. If that means I break the record then I'll be delighted."
