Galatasaray and Sturm draw equal satisfaction
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Both qualified for the next phase of the Champions' League from Group D, because Rangers failed to beat Monaco in Glasgow.

Once news that Rangers had drawn filtered through to the players, both sides played out the remaining minute of extra time with an uncompetitive kickabout as Sturm, rank outsiders at the start of the competition, secured first place in the group.
The Uefa Cup holders Galatasaray, who finished the match with 10 men after Emre Belozoglu was sent off for a second bookable offence 11 minutes from time, took the lead with a 30th-minute penalty from Ergun Penbe after Sturm Graz's goalkeeper, Kazimierz Sidorczuk, brought down Hasan Sas. But the game came alive after the break when the substitute striker, Sergei Yuran, headed a 63rd-minute equaliser.
The Brazilian striker Mario Jardel put the Turks back in front after 75 minutes, meeting a free-kick from Ergun at the far post, but Sturm Graz responded in the 80th minute, capitalising from Galatasaray's disarray after Emre was sent off. Initially given to Yuran, match officials later decided the Austrians' second goal had been deflected home off the Galatasaray defender Hakan Unsal.
Also through from Arsenal's group were Sven Goran Eriksson's Lazio, who finished their campaign with a 1-0 victory away to Sparta Prague, thanks to a Fabrizio Ravanelli goal. Ravanelli scored after collecting a rebound from Simone Ingazhi's strike in the 43rd minute, neatly slotting the ball into the net.
