From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Netherlands’ hopes of salvaging a wretched qualifying campaign by securing a play-off place for Euro 2016 suffered a severe blow as Danny Blind’s side crashed to a 3-0 defeat in Turkey, who moved above them into third in Group A.

It was a sobering occasion for Blind, who has now lost his first two matches in charge, and his son, the Manchester United midfielder Daley, who was at fault for the Turks’ second goal.

The Dutch fell behind after only eight minutes in Konya, the Barcelona midfielder Arda Turan playing in the former Netherlands youth international Oguzhan Ozyakup to beat goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen.

Daley Blind then miscontrolled a throw-in to allow Arda to burst through to make it 2-0 after 26 minutes.

Wesley Sneijder and Newcastle’s Georginio Wijnaldum both missed good chances to get the visitors back into the game and with five minutes to go Burak Yilmaz wrapped up victory with a turn and finish for Turkey’s third.

Iceland and the Czech Republic sealed the two qualifying places from the group, Iceland drawing 0-0 at home to Kazakhstan to reach their first major finals, the Czechs beating Latvia 2-1 in Riga.

In Group H Italy lead the way after their second successive 1-0 victory, Daniele De Rossi getting their winner at home to Bulgaria from the penalty spot after just five minutes. De Rossi was later sent off.

Norway took a major step towards reaching their first tournament in 15 years with a 2-0 home win over Croatia, the Malmo midfielder Jo Inge Berget getting both their goals in the second half.
