Eriksson admits he might hold World Cup door open

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Sven Goran Eriksson yesterday declared himself open to the idea of playing Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard alongside a holding midfielder - if he can find a player suitable for the job.
Time is running out for the England manager to finalise his World Cup squad, but Eriksson has admitted it is not too late to impress him, and he also recognises the team could benefit from taking a no-nonsense midfield tackler to Germany.
Ledley King has already been tried out in midfield, coping well against Argentina, but he is primarily a defender. Eriksson is keeping his options open but is adamant Gerrard and Lampard can dovetail together in his midfield.
"They can do it, of course they can do it," he said. "But if we want to have one sitting midfielder, then we have to find one. It's one area which we are going to look at, that's for sure, because maybe you need it at some stage in the World Cup." Eriksson's admission sugg-ests he is ready to look outside the current squad.
Newcastle's Scott Parker could be a leading contender, having impressed consistently this season, while Manchester United striker-turned-midfielder Alan Smith could also enter Eriksson's thinking. Manchester City's Joey Barton is an outsider, but has recently shown outstanding form.
Eriksson added: "There's time for other players to knock on the door. I will open it maybe."
