Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

14 Nov 1984 (Istanbul, World Cup)
Turkey 0 England 8: Early goals by Bryan Robson and Tony Woodcock subdued the hostile crowd in the only previous match between the countries played in Istanbul. Robson went on to complete a hat-trick from midfield, Woodcock and John Barnes both scoring twice and even Viv Anderson notching a goal from right-back.
16 Oct 1985 (Wembley, World Cup)
England 5 Turkey 0: Bobby Robson gave his team "a severe dressing-down" for easing up after gaining a 5-0 lead early in the second half. Gary Lineker established himself as first-choice striker with a hat-trick as qualification was secured for the World Cup finals, the other goals coming from Chris Waddle and Bryan Robson.
29 April 1987 (Izmir, European C'ship)
Turkey 0 England 0: Unexpectedly, there was no way through this time for an England attack including Lineker, Waddle, Clive Allen (who scored 49 goals that season in domestic football), then substitutes Barnes and Mark Hateley. "Bizarre" was Bobby Robson's verdict.
14 Oct 1987 (Wembley, European Championship)
England 8 Turkey 0: Having held out in Izmir, the Turkish defence collapsed again as Lineker collected another hat-trick. The other scorers were Barnes (2), Robson, Peter Beardsley and debutant Neil Webb.
1 May 1991 (Izmir, European C'ship)
Turkey 0 England 1: Towards the end of his first, unbeaten, season as manager, Graham Taylor gave debuts to two of his less popular selections, Geoff Thomas and Dennis Wise. But the latter briefly silenced his critics by scoring the only goal of a scrappy game.
16 Oct 1991 (Wembley, European C'ship)
England 1 Turkey 0: For the first time Turkey were not outplayed on English turf, and might have earned a draw. Chris Woods in goal had to make some good saves after Alan Smith headed in a cross by Stuart Pearce.
18 Nov 1992 (Wembley, World Cup)
England 4 Turkey 0: Yet again the countries were drawn in the same qualifying group, and history reasserted itself with a comfortable England home win. Paul Gascoigne inspired it, scoring two of the goals; Pearce and Alan Shearer collected the others.
31 March 1993 (Izmir, World Cup)
Turkey 0 England 2: England mastered unpleasant aggression on the terraces and the pitch to win with goals from Gascoigne and David Platt (his 10th in 10 games). But later defeats in Norway and Holland would prevent qualification and cost Taylor his job.
2 April 2003 (Sunderland, European C'ship)
England 2 Turkey 0: The unpleasantness was mainly English this time, with attacks and abuse aimed at Turkish supporters, pitch incursions and a £68,000 fine from Uefa. Everton wunderkind Wayne Rooney justified his selection by Sven Goran Eriksson, but the goals, from Darius Vassell (pictured) and David Beckham, did not materialise until the last 15 minutes.
