Your support makes all the difference.Sam Allardyce is considering Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard for a senior England call-up for next month’s World Cup qualifiers against Malta and Slovenia following his return to action under Jose Mourinho.
Allardyce is set to name his squad on Sunday evening for the Wembley clash against Malta on October 8 and trip to Ljubljana to face Slovenia three days later.
And Lingard, 23, is one of the names being discussed by Allardyce and his coaches ahead of the finalisation of the squad.
Harry Kane’s ankle ligament injury, which threatens to keep the Tottenham forward sidelined for up to two months, has paved the way for Marcus Rashford to return to the senior squad following his hat-trick for the Under-21s against Norway earlier this month.
Allardyce saw the 18-year-old score his fourth goal of the season for United during the 4-1 victory against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Saturday, but Lingard is also understood to have impressed the England manager against the champions.
Lingard was drafted into the senior squad by Roy Hodgson last November for the Wembley friendly against France before subsequently dropping out of the picture ahead of Euro 2016.
But after missing the start of this season with injury after scoring in the Community Shield victory against Leicester, Lingard has now returned to the United team.
The Warrington-born midfielder’s versatility in being able to play on both the right and left of midfield is regarded as an asset by Allardyce, but Lingard is likely to face a battle with West Ham’s Michail Antonio for a place in the squad.
Raheem Sterling and Adam Lallana, who scored the stoppage-time winner against Slovakia in Bratislava earlier this month, remain Allardyce’s favoured options in wide midfield, with Antonio and Lingard challenging for the remaining midfield berth.
