England manager Roy Hodgson has announced a 23-man squad for Euro 2016 lacking in surprises but not in nuance or subplot.

Manchester United's teenage striker Marcus Rashford has been named in the final cut but Danny Drinkwater and Andros Townsend miss out.

After Fabian Delph was ruled out with injury following a lukewarm domestic season with Manchester City, Hodgson has elected to name a quintet of strikers in his final squad.

The 23 includes three goalkeepers, seven defenders, eight midfielders and five forwards.

Hodgson has chosen to omit Premier League winning midfielder Drinkwater, 26, despite helping Leicester City secure an unlikely title triumph last season while Townsend, 24, appears to have suffered for being unable to prevent Newcastle United suffering relegation.

Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge is likely to be the most relieved member of Hodgson’s final 23 after proving his fitness at the last minute.

The England squad in full:

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (Manchester City), Tom Heaton (Burnley), Fraser Forster (Southampton).

Defenders: John Stones (Everton), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Kyle Walker (Tottenham), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Danny Rose (Tottenham).

Midfielders: Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Dele Alli (Tottenham), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Man City), Ross Barkley (Everton), Eric Dier (Tottenham), Jack Wilshere (Arsenal), James Milner (Liverpool).

Forwards: Jamie Vardy (Leicester City), Marcus Rashford (Man Utd), Wayne Rooney (Man Utd), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool), Harry Kane (Tottenham).
