Marcelo, the Brazil left-back, opened the scoring with an own goal in the 11th minute, when he directed Ivica Olic's cross into his past goalkeeper Julio Cesar.
It was the first time in World Cup history that the first goal of the tournament was an own goal. It was also the first time Brazil ever scored an own goal in a World Cup match.
