Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Chelsea appeared to cope pretty well without him on Saturday but manager Carlo Ancelotti will nonetheless hope the knee injury suffered by Michael Essien yesterday is not serious. The 27-year-old picked up the injury during training with Ghana at the Africa Cup of Nations and misses tomorrow's match with Burkina Faso, with his participation in the remainder of the tournament under threat.
"He was taken to hospital for checks," a spokesman for the four-time winners said. "He has been released and is now resting at the hotel. We don't know the extent of the injury."
On the pitch yesterday, Gabon continued their promising start to the competition with a goalless draw against Tunisia in Lubango. After upsetting the odds in last week's opener against Cameroon, the Black Panthers are now within touching distance of the quarter-finals.
In the late kick-off, a header from Mohamadou Idrissou four minutes from time earned Cameroon a 3-2 victory over Zambia. The Indomitable Lions faced an early exit after going behind to a Jacob Mulenga tap-in eight minutes in. Two goals in four minutes midway through the second half from Geremi and Samuel Eto'o put Cameroon ahead, only for Chris Katongo to make it 2-2 from the spot. Enter Idrissou.
