Violence mars Luton derby win at Watford

Fights on the pitch between supporters marred Second Division Luton Town's surprise 2-1 Worthington Cup away victory against bitter rivals Watford last night.

The kick-off was delayed by 15 minutes as dozens of fans fought a running battle on the Vicarage Road pitch and Watford were forced to cancel a minute's silence to commemorate the victims of the 11 September tragedy. One fan was taken away on a stretcher after receiving treatment for a head wound.

Violence erupted when a group of Luton fans jumped the advertising hoardings behind their goal and ran unopposed on to the pitch. Stewards were powerless to prevent Watford fans from the other end running the length of the pitch to do battle, and even the corner flag was brandished as a weapon.

When play finally got under way, police in riot gear formed a protective wall behind each goal, where both sets of supporters hurled abuse at each other during the opening exchanges. It was the first meeting between the neighbouring clubs for four years.

Overall Watford – previously unbeaten at home this season – were well on top against their Second Division opponents, but failed to convert possession into chances. Matthew Spring and Steve Howard scored first-half goals, and the Hatters held out, despite Dominic Foley's late strike.
