Unhappy return for Wilson at Barnsley
Danny Wilson endured a disappointing return to Oakwell last night when his Bristol City side were eliminated from the FA Cup by his former club Barnsley, and there was no joy either for Wycombe Wanderers' new manager, Tony Adams in last night's second-round replays. The former Arsenal and England defender saw his side beaten 3-2 at Mansfield Town, with Liam Lawrence scoring a hat-trick.
Barnsley took the lead in the 24th minute when a Brian O'Callaghan free-kick was headed home by Antony Kay. Garry Monk doubled the Yorkshire team's lead in the 43rd minute with a left-footed shot from Stephen Carson's corner. City hit back 10 minutes into the second half when Christian Roberts, but Wilson had to leave his old stamping ground empty-handed. The Tykes advance to meet the winners of Sheffield Wednesday's game with Scunthorpe tonight.
Lawrence secured a third-round tie for Mansfield at home to Burnley when he converted his second penalty of the evening in the last minute. He gave Mansfield the lead in the 14th minute with a right-foot lob over the Wycombe goalkeeper, Steve Williams. However, the visitors levelled with the first of a Jermaine McSporran double 11 minutes into the second half. The 26-year-old netted his second three minutes later to give his side the lead for the first time.
But Mansfield drew level again in the 72nd minute after a foul by Williams on Iyseden Christie in the Wycombe box and the midfielder completed his hat-trick in stoppage time.
Steve Wilson, the goalkeeper, and Danny Whitaker won a penalty shoot-out 4-2 for 10-man Macclesfield against Cambridge to claim a third-round meeting with Swansea City. Wilson saved Cambridge's third attempt from John Taylor to give Whitaker a chance to win the game which he took, firing his spot-kick past Shaun Marshall.
John Miles collected a Matthew Tipton through-ball and curled home the opener for Macclesfield after 26 minutes. However, the visitors suffered a setback on the brink of half-time when Karl Munroe was dismissed for a second bookable offence. Cambridge took advantage of their extra man to equalise through a John Turner header in the 66th minute.
That took the match into extra time where Macclesfield regained the lead through Tipton only for Cambridge to level again through Adam Tann.
