Strachan, who is 44 and who played for Scotland, Leeds and Manchester United, had been at the Highfield Road club for five years.
The Sky Blues were relegated this year after 34 years in the top English division and have suffered a poor start to their Division One season, with only one win in five games.
Strachan's assistants, Garry Pendrey and Jim Blyth, have also gone.
Fans chanted for Strachan's removal and demonstrated outside the ground after Saturday's home defeat by Grimsby.
The Coventry chairman Bryan Richardson said: "For two years he almost single-handedly kept Coventry in the Premiership. As a manager he gave 100-per-cent effort every day for this club.
"We all wish Gordon huge success in the future and thank him for his refreshing honesty, humour and sheer guts."
The club was installed as one of the favorites for promotion back to the Premier League despite the sale of John Hartson to Celtic, Craig Bellamy to Newcastle and Mustapha Hadji to Aston Villa.
