Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Romance or revenue? Dagenham had them both as they beat Plymouth Argyle to become the second non-league team into the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The replay victory earned the side from the Essex borders £265,000 in television money last night and a plum away draw against Norwich City. It was a case of third time lucky in the third round after losing out at this stage to Premiership opposition for the past two years. Plymouth did not provide such stiff opposition for the Conference side.

Sky Sports even got a goal from Junior McDougald – who has scored in each round this season and who makes his living in the satellite equivalent of Footballers' Wives, Dream Team. His header, with five minutes left, capped a fine second-half performance.

Dagenham went ahead on 20 minutes when Danny Shipp's left-foot shot from the edge of the area took a heavy deflection past the goalkeeper Romain Larrieu. It prompted another elaborate goal celebration, although there was no sign of the toy metal detector that was danced around in the first game.

The goal came four minutes after a header by the defender Ashley Vickers had struck the bar and bounced down on the line, prompting premature celebrations.

Before that, it had been the visitors, playing into a strong wind, who had looked the more menacing with the manager, Paul Sturrock, fielding three strikers and pushing Dagenham back. Their main route was the aerial strength of Mickey Evans and it was from one of his knockdowns that the French midfielder, David Friio, forced a fine save from Tony Roberts.

The former Welsh international did well again after Dagenham's goal when he turned Evans' shot round for a corner. Plymouth went even closer on 33 minutes when Marino Keith swivelled and shot from 20 yards only to strike a post. The same player then missed two golden chances in the space of a minute, blasting over after a goalmouth scramble and then snatching at his shot when clean through.

The Daggers should have gone further ahead on 61 minutes after Larrieu rushed from his goal only for McDougald to skip past him on the right wing. His cross failed to clear a covering defender.

Then Paul Terry had a shot blocked from point-blank range after a strong run by John McGrath. Roberts continued to impress in the home goal as Plymouth, 11th in the Second Division, became more desperate.
