Whittingham levelled from distance just before the hour and struck the winner with a 25-yard free-kick. Jones was full of praise for last season's leading scorer. "Outstanding and his work rate was superb. Both free-kicks were superbly taken," Jones added, "his second was pure quality."

Robbie Savage celebrated his 600th League game by scoring Derby County's last in the 3-0 defeat of Preston North End, whose Keith Treacy was also sent off. Barnsley beat Nottingham Forest 3-1 and Doncaster came from a goal behind to win 3-1 at Scunthorpe , Billy Sharp, former Iron idol, scoring twice.

But hours later the Ronaldo show vaulted Real Madrid above both to the summit with a 4-1 win at Malaga. The Portuguese attacker created two goals for Gonzalo Higuain and scored two of his own, the first from Mesut Ozil's pass and the second by winning and converting a penalty.
