The former Forest defender Chris Doig had a game to forget as he first conceded a penalty - which Jack Lester fired over the bar - and then turned the ball into his own net for the only goal. The Cobblers' misery was complete when Scott McGleish was sent off.
Millwall's rude introduction to life in League One continued as they crashed 5-1 at Chesterfield. Paul Hall and Wayne Allison both struck twice and Caleb Folan also found the net as the Spireites opened up a 5-0 lead inside 65 minutes at Saltergate. Substitute Kevin Braniff did pull one back after 72 minutes but it was little consolation for the embattled Lions.
Port Vale secured top spot over Forest on goal difference with a 1-0 win at Cheltenham. Leon Constantine claimed the only goal 10 minutes into the second half. Brighton and Brentford remain unbeaten after a late Chris Moore goal secured a 2-2 draw for the Bees at the Withdean Stadium. The Seagulls had seemed on course for victory after opening up a 2-0 lead inside 13 minutes through a Dean Hammond penalty and Gary Hart. Kevin O'Connor pulled one back before half-time before Moore struck at the death.
In League Two, Accrington Stanley secured their first win in the Football League since 1962 as they overcame Barnet 2-1 at the Interlink Express Stadium. Goals from Romuald Boco either side of half-time secured victory.
Dennis Wise's Swindon maintained their flying start with a 1-0 win over Rochdale thanks to an Alan Goodall own goal. Christian Roberts and Paul Evans both missed penalties for the Robins.
Darlington's 100 per cent start was ended as the Quakers crashed 4-1 at Boston. Barry Conlon had levelled for Darlington after an early Paul Tait effort but Tim Ryan restored Boston's lead with a penalty and Julian Joachim wrapped up the win with two late goals.
Walsall went top on goal difference from Swindon with a 2-0 win over Hartlepool courtesy of two first-half goals from Dean Keates.
