From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Billy Davies has played down the chances of his Nottingham Forest side winning automatic promotion, despite their moving into second place on Saturday. Forest beat Watford 1-0 at the City Ground, courtesy of Marcus Tudgay's first-minute goal, but Davies doubted his team's chances of holding onto a place in the top two.

"I think we are great candidates for the play-offs," he said, "but if I am totally honest I think we are a little bit short for going up automatically. That is my honest evaluation."

Forest's move up to second came courtesy of Norwich City's 2-1 defeat at Burnley. Jay Rodriguez scored the winning goal with nine minutes remaining. Norwich manager Paul Lambert was impressed with his team's performance, however, despite the result. "I thought we were brilliant in the second half, I really did. There was only one team in it, but at the end of the day we got beaten. But you pick yourself up and go again."

Leeds United solidified their position in the play-off places with a 1-0 home win over Coventry City. They maintained the four-point lead over Millwall and Leicester City, in seventh and eighth place respectively, the winning goal being scored by Davide Somma early in the second half.

Crystal Palace achieved a crucial victory over their fellow relegation-candidates Middlesbrough, their first win since beating Preston North End 1-0 on 3 January. The goal was scored by James Vaughan and brought a first win for new manager Dougie Freedman, who praised Vaughan: "Fortune favours the brave and Vaughany is definitely brave. I am always going to stick up for the strikers, that's for sure."
