Brighton have confirmed former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder Gus Poyet as their new manager.

The 41-year-old Uruguayan has been out of work since leaving his role as assistant manager at Spurs in October 2008.

Poyet, who has also held coaching roles at Swindon and Leeds, has signed a deal until the end of next season and will be assisted by former Tottenham team-mate Mauricio Tarrico.

He replaces Russell Slade at the helm of the League One strugglers after he left the club 10 days ago.

"Gus is one of the best up and coming young coaches in this country," said Albion chairman Tony Bloom. "We are delighted to give him his first opportunity in management.

"His credentials are exceptional and all of the reports we have had on his coaching ability are outstanding."
