Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Southampton remained second in the table after they drew 1-1 with Cardiff City at St Mary's last night. Malky Mackay's side opened the scoring in the 36th minute, winger Craig Conway (right) firing home. Southampton levelled, though, 12 minutes after the break as Rickie Lambert converted a penalty after Kevin McNaughton handballed in the box. Elsewhere, Nikola Zigic struck four goals to claim Birmingham a 4-1 win over Leeds at Elland Road. Ross McCormack put the hosts ahead in the 19th minute before Zigic headed Birmingham level. The Serbian forward struck again in the 61st minute and hit his hat-trick three minutes later before adding a fourth for the promotion hopefuls. Elsewhere, Barnsley beat Derby County 3-2, Matt Done, Scott Wiseman and Andy Gray scoring first-half goals, with Jamie Ward and Tom Carroll scoring for Derby. Coventry stay bottom of the table after a 2-1 defeat at Blackpool, Conor Thomas scored for the visitors, but Kevin Phillips and Gary Taylor-Fletcher grabbed the points late on. Nottingham Forest went down 2-0 at home to Burnley, with Jay Rodriguez scoring twice.
