Your support makes all the difference.Nottingham Forest remained managerless on Monday night after Neil Warnock rejected the chance to succeed Billy Davies. After a day of talks with Nottingham Forest owner Fawaz al-Hasawi, Warnock decided the pair would be unable to work together.
“I did not feel the conditions of the job were right for me to manage,” Warnock said. “I wish them well for the rest of the season.”
Davies was fired on Monday morning, as revealed late Sunday night on Independent online, after 13 months at the City Ground. It was his second dismissal by Forest in three years and came just five months after signing a four-year contract extension.
Warnock was the preferred replacement and was offered a deal to the end of the season with the aim of taking Forest back into the Premier League – which would be a record eighth promotion for the veteran manager. It is understood money was not a problem, just that he and Hasawi were unable to construct a suitable working relationship.
With most of Davies’ staff having left with him, Gary Brazil, the youth-team coach, will be in charge for Tuesday’s match against Charlton Athletic at the City Ground.
In handing Davies a new deal in October Hasawi said: “I look forward with great excitement to working alongside him for many years to come.”
With a £9m investment last summer Forest looked on course for at least the play-offs, and possibly automatic promotion, just two months ago. But a loss of form, during which they went out of the FA Cup to League One Sheffield United, and took just three points from 21, meant they dropped out of the play-off places. Saturday’s 5-0 thrashing by local rivals Derby County spelled the end for Davies.
