Michael Appleton set to take charge at Blackburn Rovers

Michael Appleton is expected to be announced as the new Blackburn Rovers manager, despite a boardroom power struggle at Ewood Park threatening to scupper the move.

The Blackpool manager held informal talks with Rovers' managing director, Derek Shaw, on Wednesday, which led to an official approach being lodged with the Seasiders. Their chairman, Karl Oyston, granted permission today afternoon for Appleton to formally speak with their Championship rivals.

Appleton is thought to have agreed a two-and-a-half-year contract despite only being at Bloomfield Road for two months. The way in which Blackpool are run is considered a major factor in the manager's decision to quit.

Blackburn's global adviser Shebby Singh was unaware of the approach to Appleton and was said to favour appointing the caretaker manager, Gary Bowyer, for the foreseeable future. However, it appears that Shaw now has the backing of the owners, Venky's.

Blackpool will look at Bradford's Phil Parkinson as they seek a third manager this season.
