Your support makes all the difference.Nottingham Forest have started like the League One promotion favourites they are, a 1-0 defeat of Northampton Town at Sixfields making it three wins in three starts and no goals conceded.
The new Forest manager, Colin Calderwood, led the Cobblers to promotion last season which perhaps explained the niggly undercurrent to much of the match, ending with the sending-off of the Northampton captain, Scott McGleish, dismissed for a late challenge on Julian Bennett. By then, Forest were ahead.
With the second half only 12 seconds old, Grant Holt crossed and Craig Doig turned the ball into his own net. It had not been a good afternoon for the former Forest defender. In the first period, Holt was fouled by Doig in the penalty area but Jack Lester sent his spot-kick sailing over the bar for his second miss of the season, and Forest's third failure. They are clearly using the England technique.
Keeping up the early pace with Forest, and top of the table having scored a goal more, are Port Vale, who inflicted a first defeat of the season on Cheltenham Town when Leon Constantine scored the only goal of their game at Whaddon Road. It was his third of the season.
Chesterfield are third after a 5-1 thrashing of Millwall, Paul Hall and Wayne Allison scoring twice as the Lions endure a poor start under new manager Nigel Spackman. Only Blackpool and Rotherham are below Millwall. But the Millers made a start on whittling away their -10 points penalty when Will Hoskins' goal earned a 1-0 win at Blackpool. That's -7 then.
Elsewhere, Brighton and Brentford kept their unbeaten records thanks to a 2-2 draw at the Withdean Stadium, Lee Steele scored twice as newcomers Leyton Orient beat Bournemouth 3-2 and Bradford came from 2-0 down to beat Gillingham 4-2, Dean Windass scoring twice. Oldham earned their first points of the season by beating visitors Swansea City 1-0, Maheta Molango on target.
In League Two, no fewer than six teams started yesterday on maximum points but by 5pm only leaders Walsall and Swindon Town had three wins to their name. Dean Keates scored twice as The Saddlers won 2-0 against visitors Hartlepool, who when trailing 1-0 missed their third penalty of the season. Dennis Wise's Swindon, meanwhile, had to rely on an Alan Goodall own goal for their 1-0 defeat of Rochdale, Dale's third 1-0 reverse of the season.
And lastly, Accrington Stanley earned their first League points since 1962 when Benin international Romuald Boco scored both goals in the 2-1 defeat of Barnet, who are still without a point as are Bury, who lost 2-1 at home to Shrewsbury.
