A power cut delayed kick-off but that did not deter Michael Morrison, who fired the hosts ahead after 31 minutes. However, the three points were not secured until Danny Green's last-minute strike.
Sheffield Wednesday climbed above local rivals United into second after early goals from Reda Johnson and Chris Lines were enough to secure a 2-1 victory over Tranmere at Hillsborough. United, meanwhile, succumbed 3-2 at Carlisle, Jon-Paul McGovern's 71st minute winner coming after Francois Zoko and Ched Evans had traded two goals apiece in the first-half. Elsewhere, Huddersfield's prolific striker Jordan Rhodes scored his 20th goal of the season in a 2-2 draw at Notts County.
In League Two, Crawley maintained their lead at the top thanks to a late equaliser at Oxford United. Jon-Paul Pittman's goal after 55 minutes looked to have secured victory for the home side but Tyrone Barnett salvaged a point for Crawley in the final minute.
Cheltenham kept up the pressure on Crawley, a 2-1 win at Port Vale taking them to within a point of the leaders. Second-half goals from the captain Alan Bennett and the substitute Brian Smikle secured all three points for Mark Yates's side.
Northampton climbed off the bottom of the table with a 1-1 draw at Shrewsbury. The result nevertheless extended The Cobblers' winless league run to 13 games. Plymouth Argyle dropped to bottom on goals scored following a 2-1 defeat at home to Torquay.
