Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Huddersfield Town lived up to their Terriers nickname yesterday when they came from behind, twice, at Paul Ince's Milton Keynes Dons to replace them in League One's third-placed berth after a fine 3-2 win. Jordan Rhodes and Theo Robinson grabbed the equalisers before Anthony Kay headed the 78th-minute winner.

Reaction to defeat in the first match of the season at home varies. Although Norwich City are showing signs of renewed vigour under Paul Lambert having started with a 7-1 home defeat by Colchester, yesterday's 0-0 draw with Walsall at Carrow Road was a disappointment. Although not so calamitously as the Canaries, Bristol Rovers lost at home on the first day of the season but have improved significantly, and Jeff Hughes, with a penalty, and Chris Lines accounted for Millwall 2-0. Rovers go fourth. Yeovil's Terrell Forbes headed into his own net to hand Swindon Town a 1-0 win and send them up to sixth.

At the bottom, Brighton's Nicky Forster's goal earned the Seagulls a first win of the season, 1-0 against Wycombe, but John Barnes' Tranmere Rovers had Shaleum Logan sent off on the stroke of half-time at Carlisle United precipitating a 3-0 defeat. Simeon Jackson scored twice as Gillingham beat Exeter City 3-0.

In League Two, Rotherham United gave manager Mark Robins something to think about during his absence on gardening leave while he decides whether to take over at Barnsley, bottom of the Championship, by going top of League Two. The Millers came from behind in their 3-1 defeat of Chesterfield, which included Adam Le Fondre's fourth goal of the season. Dagenham & Redbridge's Paul Benson scored his sixth league goal of the season but the Daggers were held 1-1 at Cheltenham , but the rise of Bournemouth continued with a 2-1 win at Torquay, Steve Fletcher's 87th-minute winner lifting the Cherries to second.

Elsewhere, Crewe beat Macclesfield 2-1 to go fifth, Calvin Zola, with a 12th-minute header, and Joel Grant, five minutes from time, scoring.

At the bottom, Rene Howe scored twice from close-in as Lincoln City, who sacked Peter Jackson last week, beat Darlington 3-0, one of the few teams in a worse position than the Imps. Robert Grant scored twice as Bury beat Grimsby Town 2-0.
