Michael Bostwick's free-kick midway through the first half and Dwight Gayle, on-loan from Dagenham, put Posh 2-0 up two minutes into the second half. Rudy Gestede pulled one back with a minute left, but Posh held on to win 2-1.
Crystal Palace's Glenn Murray scored twice at St Andrew's – that's 20 this season – but Birmingham City substitute Nikola Zigic's header and a late Papa Bouba Diop goal saw second-placed Eagles held 2-2. Marvin Emnes's 89th-minute penalty and Scott McDonald's strike a minute later saw Middlesbrough, third, break Wolves' resistance at the Riverside to win 2-0. Hull City also won 2-0, against Huddersfield Town, but Alex Bruce, son of the Tigers manager Steve, saw red after the final whistle for pushing over Alan Lee. Father was not impressed with the Terriers striker. "Cheat is the right word for him, I don't use that lightly but that's the right word for him," said Bruce Snr. "He's 15-and-a-half stone and he went down like that. Alex is wrong with his retaliation, but he only pushes him in the chest. He's my son but he takes after his mother."
Chris Taylor, a half-time substitute for Millwall, scored the goal that beat visitors Leicester City 1-0 and lifted the Lions into the top six, replacing Watford who drew 1-1 at Burnley, some satisfaction for the Clarets manager, Sean Dyche, sacked by the Hornets in July. Bristol City's seventh home defeat of the season, 2-0 to Derby County leaves them still struggling.
In League One, Clayton Donaldson's late strike earned Brentford a 2-1 win at Notts County and took the Bees into the automatic promotion places.
Mark McGhee was sacked as manager of Bristol Rovers after their 4-1 defeat at York, their eighth defeat in 10 League Two matches. McGhee, 55, had been in the job less than a year but his fate was sealed as Rovers let in four goals in the first 33 minutes.
