From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Peterborough director of football, Barry Fry, has confirmed that Middlesbrough are in talks over their captain George Boyd.

Boyd, who has 12 goals to his name this season, was subject of an enquiry from Boro in the January transfer window but it was rejected in order to give Posh the best chance of survival.

"We are still in touch with Middlesbrough about him, but I'd be surprised if he left while it is still mathematically possible for us to stay up," Fry said.

"Boro were one of a number of clubs who enquired about George in January. They made a bid which was rejected by the chairman because he wanted to keep all his best players to give us the best chance of avoiding relegation.

"We have had several discussions with George's agent regarding a new contract though and he has consistently made it clear that George would not be signing an extension."

Meanwhile, the Peterborough manager Jim Gannon admits he will not be making any decisions on his future until the end of the season. Gannon replaced Mark Cooper at the helm last month on a three-month deal and was faced with the big task of helping Posh avoid relegation from the Championship. "It's not a big professional decision to commit, it's going to be a massive personal decision," said Gannon.

"There's a lot to be considered but at the moment I'm not dwelling too much on that. I just want to come in and make a difference and we can discuss what happens after this season then."

The Sheffield United defender Derek Geary is likely to miss the rest of the season after discovering he will be out for three months with an ankle injury. The full-back, who returned to action earlier in the season following over a year out with a knee problem, sustained the injury in the defeat to Nottingham Forest last week and scans have revealed the full extent of the damage.

The United manager, Kevin Blackwell, said: "It is a savage blow for Derek because it looks as though it will be three months before he has recovered so that is virtually the season over for him."

The Barnet manager, Ian Hendon, has quashed reports linking Albert Adomah with Championship clubs and dismissed suggestions he could leave on loan. Blackpool failed in their attempts to sign Adomah in the summer but the winger, who is thought to be attracting interest from other clubs, rejected a three-year deal at Underhill that would have made him the Bees' highest-paid player ever. Hendon said: "I am sick of people – most probably it is his advisers – rocking the boat and making my job hard creating speculation like this between transfer windows, and making ridiculous statements about salaries."

The Notts County owner Ray Trew hopes to draw a line under recent financial problems having confirmed that a winding-up petition against the club was dismissed at a High Court hearing yesterday. The League Two side are again under new ownership after Trew bought the club from Peter Trembling.

Trew is the club's third owner this season, after Trembling bought the club from Munto Finance, and he announced this week that the club will not be going into administration. Trew wants police to launch an investigation into Swiss-based Middle Eastern consortium Munto Finance. The group were in control at the League Two club between July and December last year, but Trew claims they did not put any money in and only took it out.
