Norwich have signed the Republic of Ireland utility player Gary Doherty from Tottenham Hotspur for an undisclosed fee.
The 24-year-old has signed on a three-year deal, with the option of an extra year, and has joined the Canaries squad for today's match at Manchester United.
Doherty has been signed primarily as a central defender, and he becomes Norwich manager Nigel Worthington's eighth signing of the summer.
Doug Livermore, Norwich's assistant manager, said: "The experience he's had at Premiership level and international level makes him a great addition to the squad. Obviously his favourite position is as a central defender and the gaffer will want to be playing him there. But there will be occasions if need be that he can go up front."
Doherty said: "It's a great club that's well supported. Once I spoke to the gaffer and he made it clear how much he wanted me here my mind was made up. I want to now get my place in the team and hopefully keep it for the season and then help keep the club in the Premiership."
The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, has strongly criticised Brazil for using the English champions' midfielder Edu in a friendly win over Haiti.
Edu played for 70 minutes of Wednesday's 6-0 rout in Port-au-Prince even though he had not reported back for training with Arsenal after helping Brazil win the Copa America.
"I'm not happy about this situation at all," Wenger said yesterday. "I find it disrespectful of Brazil because we have not even seen the player since mid-May. "He even asked to come off at half-time because he knew he was not ready. To select someone for an international when they have not trained for a single day after a three-week holiday is unbelievable."
