The 60-year-old former England international, who has managed Middlesbrough, Bolton and Derby among others, has been working in Denmark for the past two seasons. It is a remarkable development given Darlington's financial crisis, but that appears to be on the verge of a resolution which will see current owner George Houghton continue his control of the League Two club.
Darlington were placed in administration at the end of February and deducted ten points. Manager Dave Penney was lured away by Oldham Athletic last month.
