Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Andrew Cooke, the Burnley striker, scored the 62nd-minute goal with which the Second Division side dumped Premiership Derby County out of the FA Cup Third round at Pride Park on a day when the gap between the divisions seemed somewhat less than the pay packets would suggest.
Burnley started brightly and created the best chances in the opening 25 minutes, Mickey Mellon firing into the side-netting and Andy Payton almost fooling Mart Poom in the Rams' goal with a delicate chip.
County came into the game later in the first half but Burnley always looked dangerous, Mellon flashing a header wide. But when Cooke eventually found the target, Derby, who had lost seven of their nine Premiership matches at home, were on their way out.
Elsewhere Second Division Luton Town fought back to earn a replay at Kenilworth Road against ambitious Fulham, who trailed 1-0 and led 2-1 but were pegged back by Matthew Spring's equaliser eight minutes from the end.
Another London First Division side, Queen's Park Rangers, were also pegged back eight minutes from time by lowly opposition, this time in the shape of Third Division Torquay United. Stuart Wardley kept up his recent scoring sequence with an early strike for Rangers but Michael O'Brien's goal took Rangers back to Devon.
On a good day for the West Country survivors, Second Division Reading must have thought they had seen off Plymouth Argyle's challenge at the Madejski Stadium where they led through Jim McIntyre's goal. But another 82nd-minute equaliser, courtesy of Chris Hargreaves earned a replay at Home Park.
First Division Walsall needed a 75th-minute penalty, converted by Mark Robins, to earn a replay at Second Division Gillingham.
Bradford City took a day off from their difficulties in adjusting to the quality of play in the Premiership to visit Crewe, who are having league problems of their own in the First Division. It was 1-1 when substitute Dean Saunders popped up to send the Bantams into the next round.
The Norwich City goalkeeper, Andy Marshall, had a nightmare against Coventry City at Carrow Road. With the score goalless he let Noel Whelan's harmless cross slip through his hands for Coventry's first and after Chris Llewelyn had equalised allowed Cedric Roussel's shot to slip under his body. Coventry went on to win 3-1.
Sunderland, who have had little trouble in adjusting to life in the top flight, beat Portsmouth, who arrived at the Stadium Of Light having sacked their manager Alan Ball, last week. Pompey held out for 24 minutes of an uninspiring match when Gavin McCann toe-poked the ball past Aaron Flahavan to put the Wearsiders ahead. Five minutes before half-time a difficult tie became impossible when Mike Panopoulos was sent off for a bad tackle on Stefan Schwarz. It stayed 1-0.
In the matches between First Division teams, results went to league form. Charlton Athletic beat struggling Swindon Town 2-1 at the Valley and Blackburn Rovers improved performances under Tony Parkes - unbeaten in seven games - continued when they drew 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion.Having led twice through goals by Per Frandsen's deflected shot and a Nathan Blake strike they will approach the Ewood Park replay with confidence.
On the East Coast, however, Grimsby Town scored two goals in the final two minutes through Steve Livingstone, his second, and Bradley Allen to snatch a late 3-2 win over Stockport County.
Preston North End and Oldham Athletic, 22 points apart in the Second Division, battled at Deepdale. Jonathan Macken, the Preston striker, had scored against Oldham in their two league meetings this season but his appetite was nowhere near satisfied and he added another to his tally after six minutes. Graham Alexander's penalty made it 2-0, the Latics had Mark Hotte sent off as a result, but they still gave the home side an anxious final five minutes when Neil Adams pulled a goal back. But it stayed 2-1.
