From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

New Nottingham Forest chairman Frank Clark says there will be no false promises made to the next manager after disputes over transfer spending cost the club two managers in the space of four months.

Steve McClaren resigned 12 days ago after former chairman Nigel Doughty's belt-tightening measures led to a series of signings to be aborted. His frustrations echoed those of Billy Davies, who was sacked in June after failing to take the club into the top flight during a two-and-a-half-year spell at the City Ground.

Clark, who won two European Cups with Forest as a player and steered them to promotion and then third place in the Premier League as manager, said last night: "Whoever is offered the job will be made aware of the parameters he will have to work within and if he is not prepared to accept them we'll move on to somebody else.

"The last thing we want is to bring someone here on false promises."
