Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

After 13 minutes Mark Kennedy set up Chopra, signed from Cardiff City in the summer, who ran on to the pass and lobbed in from outside the penalty area. Lee Martin added the second six minutes into the second half, and on the hour Jamal Campbell-Ryce's weak back pass saw Chopra catch the Robins goalkeeper David James in possession and slip the ball into the empty net.
"A good start but we don't want to get carried away as there is a long arduous season ahead of us," Ipswich's manager Paul Jewell told the club's official website. And Chopra? "A constant threat."
At the Riverside, Portsmouth twice came from behind to earn a point in a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough. Boro led through Marvin Emnes after 26 minutes but two minutes after the break David Norris, a summer signing from Ipswich, levelled. Rhys Williams re-established Boro's lead, but Luke Varney, another summer acquisition, from Derby, earned Pompey's point with an injury-time equaliser.
Promoted Peterborough United trailed at home at half-time to Crystal Palace after Sean Scannell's goal just past the half-hour, but Posh were free-scoring in League One that's still the case as goals by Grant McCann and David Ball saw them win.
Substitutions by Burnley's manager Eddie Howe helped the Clarets rescue a point at home to Watford. Goals by Craig Forsyth and Mark Yeates put the Hornets in charge, but Charlie Austin, on at half-time, pulled one back after 77 minutes and Keith Treacy, signed from local rivals Preston, entered the fray just after the hour and equalised with six minutes remaining.
League One
Promotion favourites Huddersfield were held 1-1 at home by Bury, while Uwe Rosler's tenure as Brentford manager started with a 2-0 win over Yeovil. Both Sheffield sides won 2-0, Wednesday at home to Rochdale; United at Oldham. Preston, relegated with the Blades, lost 4-2 at home to Colchester.
League Two
Paolo di Canio's attempt to revive the fortunes of Swindon in his first managerial role saw the Robins beat visitors Crewe 3-0. Crawley Town, who ran away with the Conference, began League life with a 2-2 draw at Port Vale.
